Introduction Text
This leaflet aims to give you some insight into the three different courses
      available to students in years 12 and 13 at Harrogate Grammar School.
      Students who wish to develop their appplied computer usage skills can opt
      for either a 6 unit Single award AS/A2 award in Applied ICT or a 12 unit
      Double award in Applied ICT. Both of these courses are adminisistered by
      the OCR exam board and both courses are weighted heavily in favour of coursework
      based units.
THe final option is AS/A2 Computing a more traditional and academic subject for those students who may wish to pursue a career in programming or would like to study computer science or related subjects at university. This course is weighted heavily in favout of examined units and we ask that students have strong skills in maths that they have demonstrated at GCSE level.
Detailed Course descriptions
Single Award Applied ICT
This is a six unit course 3 unit in each year which is the equivalent of one full "A level". This course is suited to students who may wish to pursue a range of careers particularly those where creation of digital content or manipulation of data may be important. W have no specific entry requirements for thiscourse but a higher grade pass at GCSE in ICT is an advantage.
Progresion form year 12 to 13 is dependant on sucessful completion of the units in year 12
AS course Overview
The aims of the Applied GCE ‘AS’ ICT course are to encourage you to:
      • develop a broad range of ICT skills and knowledge of the uses of
      ICT in vocational contexts, as a basis for progression into further learning
      in ICT-related fields, including progression from AS to A2;
      • develop knowledge and understanding of the components, functions
      and applications of information systems within a range of organisations;
      • develop an understanding of the main principles of solving problems
      using ICT and develop the skills necessary to apply this understanding.
      • apply knowledge and understanding of ICT and use skills (e.g. planning,
      research, evaluation, problem solving) in vocational contexts;
      • develop an understanding of the impact of information systems on
      organisations’ personnel, policies and practices;
      • develop project management skills and an understanding of the need
      to work with others.

AS/A2 computing
      This is a rather more academic course than the Applied ICT single
      and double course. It gives insights into computer technology and provides
      a good grounding in basic programming skills. This course is particularly
      suitable for students considering studying computer science at University.
Three units are followed in each year with all but unit 6 being assessed by a 2 hour terminal exam.
Because of the overwhelming weighting of exams in this subject we suggest
      students who like coursework would not be suitable for this course.

      Entry Requirements

      Because of the highy technical nature of the course we ask prospective
      year 12 students to have a minimum of a Grade C GCSE pass in Maths
